I’d advise folks not to read the articulate Mr. Li’s review of A Real Pain until they have seen this soon-to-be modern classic themselves. Besides the critique being full of spoilers and much jumping about, I cannot but argue that A Real Pain is one of the more timely, beautifully written, and superbly acted films of the year. Three months after viewing Eisenberg’s comically mournful yet mournfully comic tour to Poland’s Jewish remnants at the New York Film Festival, the movie still resonates with me. Afterwards, also give “The Return” with Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus, “The Blitz,” and “Janet Planet” a try.
